The Wa Metropolis has joined the national rollout of the One Million Coders Program, a government initiative aimed at equipping Ghanaian youth with high-demand digital skills to compete in the global tech economy.
The program, which launched nationwide in 2025, is targeting 200,000 young people in its current phase. In Wa, selected training centers have received specialized laptops and started structured lessons in coding, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analytics, and software development.
On a working visit to one of the local centers on Monday, Wa Metropolitan Chief Executive Hon. Alhaji Nurah Issah Danwana assessed ongoing training sessions and interacted with participants. He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting the government’s digital transformation agenda locally.
“This program is not just about computers. It’s about jobs, innovation, and giving our youth the tools to create their own future,” Hon. Danwana said. He noted that improved digital literacy will boost employability and help Wa’s youth tap into opportunities in the global digital economy.
The One Million Coders Program is being carried out by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations in partnership with global tech giants Google and Huawei. The Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE) is providing the curriculum and technical support.
Since its launch, thousands of devices have been distributed to training centers across the country, with the Ministry confirming plans to add more centers by April 2026.
Registration for the program remains open through the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations.
The initiative is a key part of President John Dramani Mahama’s strategy to boost Ghana’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
