The Wa Metropolitan Assembly handed over 1,400 pieces of school furniture to the Metropolitan Education Directorate to be distributed to basic schools in the metropolis to address the long-standing issue of inadequate furniture for pupils.

The furniture, comprising 400 mono desks, 400 dual desks, and 200 hexagonal KG desks, was procured using 10% of the 2025 District Assemblies Common Fund allocation. An additional 400 mono desks were supplied to Fongo E/A School, bringing the total to 1,400.

Addressing the handover ceremony, Wa Metropolitan Director of Education, Madam Sophia Dimah Nandzo, said the furniture deficit had persisted in many schools for years, affecting teaching and learning. “When children are not comfortable, they cannot concentrate properly in class,” she said.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive, Alhaji Nurah Issah Danwanaa, stated that the furniture is modern and durable, made of about 90% metal and 10% wood, allowing for easy repairs and a longer lifespan. The Mayor added that the assembly will continue investing 10% of the Common Fund allocation in furniture procurement for the next four years as required by the formula.

The intervention aligns with His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to ensure no child in Ghana studies on the floor as part of his resetting Ghana agenda. The Mayor expressed gratitude to President Mahama, the MP for Wa Central and Minister of Jobs and Employment, Hon Dr Alhaji Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftancy and Religious Affairs, Hon Ahmed Ibrahim and the Minister of Education, Hon Haruna IDDRISU for their support.

The new furniture is expected to be put to good use in classrooms starting the next school day.
