In a decisive effort to fight the widespread problem of examination malpractice, educational authorities held a high-stakes meeting led by the Regional Director of Ghana Education Service, Madam Alice Ellen Abeere-Inga, bringing together key stakeholders from the education sector. The meeting, marked by serious discussions, aimed to address recurring challenges that threaten the integrity of educational qualifications, especially in areas plagued by public distrust.
Examination malpractice, shown through arrests, withheld results, and even the closure of exam centers, has caused significant job losses and weakened the value of educational certificates. Such malpractices not only undermine the credibility of the education system but also damage the reputation of institutions accused of academic dishonesty.
During the summit, teachers and directors shared concerns about maintaining honest student performance. They highlighted the harmful effect of schools known for malpractice and the severe repercussions for teachers unfairly labeled as cheats.
Recognizing the urgency, the Director General emphasized collaborative efforts with authorities such as Controllers to restore the trustworthiness of exam centers previously shut down due to malpractice. These measures are seen as positive steps toward rebuilding confidence in the education system.
Parental involvement was also emphasized as vital in preventing examination malpractice. Authorities urged parents to provide the necessary resources for their children’s exam preparation and warned against the use of illegal aids, colloquially known as ‘Apo.’ Additionally, parents were advised not to overload their children with excessive study demands close to exams, promoting balanced preparation instead.
The summit ended with a pledge to develop strategies for effectively managing and preventing exam malpractice. District directors were tasked with extending these efforts throughout their local regions to ensure widespread adoption of the new guidelines and foster an educational environment grounded in integrity and trust.
