The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has donated educational and household equipment valued at GH¢70,000 to Sombo Senior High School in the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region.
The donation, made on April 28, 2026, follows a direct appeal by students of the school for support to enhance teaching and learning conditions. The items presented included laptops, desktop computers, and a printer to boost ICT education, as well as refrigerators and cooking stoves to improve student welfare. Library shelves and sewing machines were also provided to strengthen academic infrastructure and vocational training.
Speaking during the presentation, the Board Chairman of the school, Mr. Felix Sibiri, expressed profound gratitude to the Speaker for the timely intervention. However, he raised concerns about the safety of the equipment, noting that the absence of officially appointed security personnel at the school poses a potential risk to the newly acquired resources.
The District Chief Executive for Nadowli-Kaleo District, Madam Merry Haruna, commended the initiative, describing it as a significant contribution toward improving access to quality education in the area. She emphasized that such support is crucial in ensuring that no child is left behind.
Similarly, the Lawra Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Francis Cudjoe, lauded the Speaker’s gesture, stating that the intervention would go a long way in addressing some of the infrastructural and logistical challenges faced by the school.
The Chief of Sombo, Naa Naamuo Yelpoi II, also expressed appreciation, highlighting the Speaker’s continued commitment to the development of his home community.
This latest intervention adds to the Speaker’s ongoing efforts to bridge the educational gap in the Upper West Region. Recently, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin commissioned an ultra-modern STEM laboratory in Kaleo, aimed at promoting science and technology education among students in the area.
The donation to Sombo Senior High School is expected to significantly improve both academic delivery and student welfare, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts between government officials and local stakeholders in advancing education in underserved communities.
